    My favourite part of Octopuns is how the border/text/line style changes drastically between comics.

      Not sure how it is for the rest of the world, but school fetes (pronounced "fate") are pretty common here among primary schools.

      fate - The development of events outside a person's control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power.

      they are pronounced similar, so "What have we done to deserve such a terrible fete" is pronounced the same as "What have we done to deserve such a terrible fate" The carnival(fete) is horrible, so it is saying that it was predestined to be that way?

      "Fête" sounds like "fate"

      "What did we do to deserve such a horrible fate", except "fate" is replaced by "fête" (a party or carnival, or similar event, maybe even can be interpreted as a celebration). Obviously, they were attempting to organized a fête, but something went wrong.

      Oh, NOW I see it! At first I didn't even notice it said "fete" instead of "fate".
      In my defense, I didn't know "fête" had crossed over into English (it's a French word). It's not pronounced exactly like "fate", the difference is minor - think "fet" (as in "feta" or "fetid").
