Guest Strip #6 - Brian Russell (The Underfold)

Yet another guest strip. I received this comic in an email that only said "I can't tell if I made this non-offensive or not". I can't tell either so I'm going to leave it up to you guys. All I know is that I stared at it blankly for 5 minutes and then laughed. More than I have ever laughed at an Octopun.

The creator of this possibly-offensive comic is Brian Russell. When he is not making guest comics for Octopuns (which is 99.9% of the time) he is making an amazing webcomic called The Underfold. It's a self-proclaimed "absurdist geek comic" so if you like absurdist geek comics, then today is your lucky day. It is also very well suited to people who have never heard the term absurdist geek comic before right now (I am one of those people).

The main point is that you should go check it out. So, GO DO THAT.

Now that you are back, I should tell you that he also tweets things over at @Brian_Russell so you should follow him if you like absurdist geek tweets (and/or regular tweets).

The bad news is that this is probably the last guest comic for a while.

  1. I didn't get it until I asked my wife to help me figure it out, and she, as puzzled as I was, read the second panel aloud.

  7. This is way better than those other ones by that other guy.

You know who I'm talking about.

  8. Go West.

    Life is peaceful there.

    In the open air.

    Where the skies are blue.

  9. "Gaze"

that took far too long for me to get.

  10. Your gaze? Your gays?

  11. Took me a while. Probably because I was surprised that they were so easily directed. Glad I kept an o-pun mind.

  12. hahaha, I didn't get it for a while, but then I said 'gaze' out loud, and ahhh...

  13. Oh the confusion I have wrought! Glorious chaos!

  14. Firstly, I believe this is a homophone.

Secondly, "The homophonic pun, a common type, uses word pairs which sound alike (homophones) but are not synonymous."

    WIKIPEDIA'D.

  15. Wow.
That actually took me quite a while to get.

    *HINT* Gaze.

  16. I think what made it difficult was that I couldn't tell that the other two guys were homosexuals..which is kind of hard to portray on an octopus..points for effort, Brian

  17. Got it quickly.
    Laughed hard.

Still find Octopuns better though! <3

  18. I'm pretty sure homonyms do = puns... How else would they work?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Person who said homonyms ≠ puns got octo-pwned. =P
I thought it was a pun of "gaze" said weirdly to sound like "guys" at first. Then I saw that it was apparently possibly offensive and figured it out. I like.

  20. When will you make us a real octopuns comic??????

    ReplyDelete
  21. The previous comic is as real as you're going to get.

  22. Yeah, they had to be more obviously/stereotypically gay, Brian. I didn't even realise it was a scarf, I thought if it was a scarf it would have been more obviously "a scarf" in the second last panel, but it just looks like... a thing.

But! Really good joke. I like this a lot.

  23. Aha it took me forever but I love it now

  24. Literally read it about fifteen times then out loud and boom. Got it.

    All the awards.

  25. you get a lot of guest strips, octopuns.

    ReplyDelete
  26. gays= gaze oh... BWAAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH

    ReplyDelete
  27. ahahahaha! I'm so glad somebody mentioned the connection between "gays" and "gaze"... wouldn't have guessed it otherwise!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Homophone, TWO JOKES FOR ONE.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Bellmoth got it right: good work, Bellmoth. A double pun (= four meanings). Technically, however, a true octo-pun would have eight meanings. I've yet to see such a magnificent animal.

  30. I had to read the comments to get this one, then I realised why. In my regional accent (Northern Irish), 'gaze' and 'gays' have completely different pronunciation: 'gaze' is like the 'ea' in 'hear' rather than being synonymous to 'gays' which we would pronounce similarly to most accents. Good one though, if you have the right accent :L

  31. I was about to give up. Then I read it slowly. And laughed myself to death.

  32. gays. gaze. gays. yeah..

  33. Why are they travelling on a box?

    ReplyDelete
  34. omg i totally got it lol best hiden joke ever

  35. Direct your GAYS he made them move so he could see the octopuses are gay
